Product Description

Buy the best, cry once. Each Saddleback Leather piece is built with thick, tough to sew full grain leather with clean unfinished edges that scratches beautifully (ages and patinas perfectly). Every work of leather is made by man not by automated machine. Because of that and the thickness, the seams and stitches aren't always precisely spaced, but they sure are strong. They are not perfect and that's what makes them perfect. Our craftsmen use the toughest thread around and stout rivets on all stress points. We refuse to use zippers, snaps or anything that'll eventually break. If you want a flawless mass produced pretty boy bag made for the masses, by the masses, your search is not over. You might find a small scar or two on your leather (which was the least of the bull's ill fortune). That's the beauty of full grain boot leather. Photos of these briefcases all over the world and the differences of full grain, top grain, genuine an bonded leather are on the website. These are handmade, to last longer and age better than you ever will.

Guy Murphy Said: Regarding the Briefcase ( Sep. 3rd 2009 )
Since the Saddleback web site and most on line reviews bragg sufficiently about the great leather and quality of construction, I thought I might offer a couple of brief comments on broken in models (something nobody knows about unless they have an old one) and size. I bought a well broken in used one in Large in a color that wasn't my preferred, then sold it for a brand new one in XL in my prefered color. The differeces are significant. The used one had had about 18 months of daily use by a college student. It was soft and supple but not "floppy" in a bad way and it still stood upright on its on. It was much more comfortable to carry than my new one. My new one is stiff, like a new premium quality ball glove was in the 60's and 70's. In other words, I can't wait to break it in. It's got that stiff "A-frame" look and I can't wait for it to relax. It doesn't look bad but it screams "I'm a new briefcase!!!" I'm confident it will wear well but I try to use it every day to speed up the process. And though I said I wouldn't add to the numerous comments out there about the leather quality, I can't help myself: my gosh, it is incredible. Thick, tough, but flawlessly beautiful. If it were a beautiful woman, it wouldn't be some waify runway model, it would be Gabrielle Reece. Regarding the size difference between a large and an XL, it seems a bigger change than I would have guessed. Whereas the large would snuggly (though just barely) hold my 14" wide (not diagonal screen size) laptop and easily hold lots of files, the XL seems massive. I think it will come down to how you plan to use yours. I'd say for most folks, the large (or maybe a medium) would work 95% of the time. However, if you sometimes haul books to class or court, you'll appreciate the extra volume. And if the clothes aren't bulky and you leave the laptop at home, the XL can sub as an overnight bag. I mean, it won't hold clothles like their duffle likely will (which I now have my eye on). The center divider, gadget pockets, and triangular shape limit its clothles packing ability. But you can still pack a summer weight change of clothes in there. Having said all that, remember ANY sized Saddleback briefcase can be made smaller, and less wide at the base, by cinching up all three straps. However, even the XL blown wide open still fits as a carry oe. Finally, people have lamented there is no way to go to a storefront and compare the sizes and colors side by size in person. Saddleback may be doing us all a favor. If I walked into such a store, and saw the full array of products and colors, I'm afraid of what I might walk out with. My bank account might never recover. Overall, an excellent quality bag.
H. Kerr Said: Looks Great - But Not Practical For Every Day Use ( Aug. 11th 2009 )
Warning, these briefcases are HEAVY and bulky. So, if you're going to use it daily for work and have any amount of walking to do with a laptop and files and during the summer when it's hot outside, these heavy bags, while looking great, are NOT practical as every day work briefcases. I bought one of the large bags, and buying the bag online without being able to compare the different sizes side by side was a mistake. (I knew I shouldn't have paid that much for something I didn't physically see first.) Saddleback needs to figure out how to sell the bags in a store so the buyer can compare sizes and weights. Everytime I've wanted to take the bag to work, I instead switch back to my regular light, non-bulky bag. So basically, I paid over $500 for a bag that will sit in my bedroom unused. But it looks great...
John M. Robertson Said: They'll fight over it while you are alive! ( Jun. 25th 2009 )
I was impressed by the description and reviews and when mine arrived I was even more impressed. I really thought nobody made this quality anymore, and am pleased to report that I was wrong. I got the XL size satchel and it holds everything with room for more. If you are the type to spend the money once on something of good quality that will last , this is a product for you. The only thing is that many people don't really know how to keep care of leather anymore, or what is good leather. Check out saddlebackleather.com to check out their products and the Leather 101 page. As for maintaining leather saddle soap and mink oil are good products for leather, although letting the Saddleback products age naturally is a good thing. With a 100 year warranty you cant go wrong.
Jeremy Porter Said: Great Product! ( Jun. 14th 2009 )
I've had this bag for about a week now. When I received the shipping notice they simply referred to as my "leather". I'm not sure why they could not call it a briefcase, bag or whatever. It sounds a little perverse. When it first arrived the box was unmarked but I could smell the leather from inside--so I knew what it was. When I first took it out, I have to admit I was a little surprised that is so heavy. I bought the large briefcase and it is every bit of 7.5 pounds with nothing in it. It smelled great and I tried it on. Then I realized why it referred to simply as "leather". I filled up with a few of my items and adjusted the straps. I tried converting to a back pack which is nice, but not very comfortable with a heavy load. I carried the bag all over while I walked about for work. This bag proved to be comfortable to carry and easy to manage even though it is heavy. I also found that the color did in fact rub off a bit on my pants. Most of it washed out without a problem though. I think this bag will last every bit of 100 years and probably then some. The "leather" will need to be cared for properly, but I think it is a solid investment. My "leather" and I are very happy together. This is a great bag and I will definitely get good use of it.
C. S. Anderson Said: MONEY WELL SPENT ( May. 21st 2009 )
I had wanted a wanted a tobacco brown briefcase for a couple of years and even got outbid on a couple. I finally decided that life was short and I had better get one instead of buying cheap messenger bags and soon after wishing that I had bought the Saddleback instead. Well.. they are all they are said to be. The smell and feel of the leather is exceptional. The quality is all there and very evident. This is a heavy leather bag that will last for generations. My wife is starting to eye it and I may have to keep it locked in my truck (my 26 year old daughter will never see it). If you have looked at Saddleback bags but have hesitated to buy, don't! They are well worth the money. I only wish that I had bought mine when I first saw them a few years ago. By now, it might look just a little broken in. This thing will only get better with age and use, contrary to almost anything that you buy these days.
